Conducting cutting-edge planetary health research

Marié Landsberg

PhD Student

Marié is a dedicated PhD student at the University of the Witwatersrand, driven by a deep passion for physiological research. As a member of the esteemed Brain Function Research Group at the Wits School of Physiology, her past and current research focuses on neonatal neurodevelopment. Her research interests also extend to the emerging field of climate change as a new key area of study, in collaboration with the Wits Planetary Health Research Group.

Marié holds a BHSc in Biomedical Science (with distinction) and a BHSc Honours in Experimental Physiology (with distinction). Her academic journey has cultivated a strong enthusiasm for research and scientific writing, and she firmly believes that lifelong learning is essential to becoming a successful researcher. As a PhD candidate, Marié is committed to contributing meaningfully to the research community and fostering connections with mentors and peers.

Marié is currently involved in the groundbreaking Bio-Heat Study, which investigates the effects of climate change and excessive heat on maternal and neonatal health. Through her research, she seeks to deepen the understanding of the pathophysiology underlying neonatal developmental impairments while also addressing maternal mental and physical health.

Beyond her academic pursuits, Marié enjoys reading and spending quality time with friends, family, and pets. She is deeply passionate about advancing biomedical research in maternal and child health and advocating for greater awareness of critical issues such as climate change and mental health.
