Conducting cutting-edge planetary health research

Jeroen de Bont

Assistant Professor

Jeroen de Bont is a dedicated researcher with a strong commitment to climate and health. In their current role at Karolinska Insitutet, Jeroen applies innovative epidemiological designs and statistical methods to evaluate the impact of environmental factors and climate-related hazards on pregnancy and newborn health.

With a background in environmental epidemiology, Jeroen brings over 12 years of experience in data management, fieldwork, data analysis, project coordination, and publishing in peer-reviewed journals. While his work has primarily been based in Europe, he has increasingly collaborated with partners in Africa and India in recent years. He has worked with major public institutions across both the Global North and South, with research published in high-impact journals such as Nature Medicine and The Lancet Planetary Health. His expertise includes extensive experience working with environmental data—particularly air pollution and noise—and applying state-of-the-art statistical methods to assess their impact on human health.

Currently, Jeroen is involved in several international projects, including EXPANSE, HIGH Horizons, GHAP, and APNOI-Cardio. These projects investigate how multiple environmental exposures—especially extreme heat—affect maternal and newborn health. His research aims to generate robust evidence on the effects of heat exposure on perinatal outcomes across diverse settings in both the Global North and South. Additionally, he is working to develop improved methodologies for evaluating these associations, with the ultimate goal of placing pregnancy and child health at the center of climate adaptation strategies.

Outside of his professional role, Jeroen enjoys playing beach volleyball and hiking in nature. He is passionate about protecting the Earth’s natural beauty in the face of a changing climate—a personal commitment that deeply complements his professional mission.
